After much deliberation and much research conducted from the front row stalls in dozen different theaters, and convenient tables at some suitable cabarets, the entire staff have come to the unanimous conclusion that our education has been sadly misdirected, and that it was a fairy godmother wrapped up in that serpent's skin and not Old Nick in person.

ぼさぼさしているうちに年が明けてしまった。とりあえず昨年の続き、5つ目の文から後半部分「the entire staff have come to the unanimous conclusion that our education has been sadly misdirected, and that it was a fairy godmother wrapped up in that serpent's skin and not Old Nick in person.」を読んでいく。

「entire」は「全体の」「すべての」という形容詞、「have come to 〜」は「〜するようになる」というイディオム、「unanimous」は「満場一致の」という形容詞、「conclusion」は「決定」とか「判定」という意味の名刺。続く「that」は関係代名詞で、「our education has been sadly misdirected」が先行詞「the unanimous conclusion」の修飾となる。

「our education has been sadly misdirected」の「has been 〜」は現在完了形（30年前に習った筈だがもう記憶が曖昧だ）で「〜たことがある」、「misdirected」は「誤った方向にすすめる」という動詞なので繋げると「私達の教育は悲しくも誤った指導をされていた」といったとこか？

とりあえず、今までの部分を繋げると「すべてのスタッフが私達の教育は悲しくも誤った指導をされていたと満場一致の判定を下すようになった。」といった感じか。

さて、次。「and that it was a fairy godmother wrapped up in that serpent's skin and not Old Nick in person.」

「and that」は前の文を受けて「しかも」という意味。

「a fairy godmother wrapped up in that serpent's skin」は直訳だと「蛇の皮を着込んだ天の助けを授ける女」という意味。「fairy godmother」は西洋の昔話や妖精譚に登場する主人公が困ったときに助けてくれる女性のこと。有名なところでは「シンデレラ」に登場する魔法使いのおばさんが「fairy godmother」なのだそうだ。「天の助けを授ける女」という訳語は何なので、訳すとすると、ざっくり「良い魔法使い」とかそんな感じで良いのだろうか？「serpent」は「蛇」、「wrapped up」は「着込む」の意味。

続く「Old Nick in person」の「Old Nick」は「悪魔」のこと。「in person」は「本人」なので「Old Nick in person」は「悪魔自身」となる。

つなげてみると「すべてのスタッフが私達の教育は悲しくも誤った指導をされていたと満場一致の判定を下すようになった。しかも、それは蛇の皮を着た良い魔法使いで悪魔ではないのだ。」となる。うーん、これも判ったような判らんような…。

次回、残り一つの文を読んでみた後、すべての文をつなげて今までの読み方の妥当性を考えてみることにしょう。
