As we were throughly delighted with what we saw we think it an idle waste of time to question, argue the toss, or debate as to whether or not the ladies and gentlemen appeared as they did for the question "Do woman dress to please men or merely for their own amusement?"

ようやく最後の文に辿り着いた。

とりあえず判らない単語の意味を調べていく。「throughly」は「徹底的に」とか「まったく」という意味、「delighted」は「喜び」とか「嬉しい」、「waste of time to question」は「waste」が「浪費」とか「無駄」という意味なので「質問は時間の無駄」ということ。「idle」も「無駄」という意味。「argue the toss」は「くどくど議論する」、「whether or not 〜」は「〜かどうか」というイディオム。

文頭の「As」はひとまず置いておいて、「we were throughly delighted」は「私たちは徹底的に喜んだ」続く「with 〜」がその理由の説明だろう。

「what we saw we think it an idle waste of time to question」はちょっとややこしいので飛ばして、後半の部分から見ていく。

「argue the toss, or debate as to 〜」は「(argue the toss, or debate) as to 〜」という解釈で良いのかな？ 「〜についてくどくど議論したり討論した」ということか。

で、「as to 〜」の「〜」部分だけど、「whether or not 〜」は「〜かどうか」という意味なので、続く「the ladies and gentlemen appeared as they did for the question "Do woman dress to please men or merely for their own amusement?"」の部分、「the ladies and gentlemen appeared as they did for the question」は「皆様は質問のために現れた」ということで良いんだろうか？「they did for the question」は直訳すると「彼らは質問のためにした」ということになるけれど、それだと意味がちょっと通じない。二重引用符で括られた「Do woman dress to please men or merely for their own amusement?」は簡単、「女性は男性を喜ばすために装うのか、それとも単に自分の楽しみのためか？」
