昨日、「argue the toss, or debate as to 〜」は「(argue the toss, or debate) as to 〜」という解釈で良いのかな？ などと書いたけど、冷静に考えるとカンマがあるので、「(〜 to question),(argue the toss), (or debate as to 〜)」と解釈するのが妥当かな。

となると、「we were throughly delighted」の理由として、「what we saw we think it an idle waste of time to question」と「argue the toss」と「or debate as to whether or not the ladies and gentlemen appeared as they did for the question "Do woman dress to please men or merely for their own amusement?"」の3つあるということか。

昨日とばした「what we saw we think it an idle waste of time to question」の部分。冒頭の「what」は疑問文ではなく強調の意味だろう。続く「we saw we think it」は「we saw we think」と2つ続けるのは何かのイディオムだったりすだろうか？辞書を引いても載っていない。そのまま読んで「私たちはそれを見て考えた」ということで良いんだろうか？「waste of time」は「無駄な時間」とか「暇つぶし」、「idle」も似たような意味だな。「to question」は末尾の二重引用符で括られた部分を指していると考えて良いのかな？

とりあえず全部つなげてみると、「だから、私たちは、"女性は男性を喜ばすために装うのか、それとも単に自分の楽しみのためか？"という疑問について暇な時間に考えてみたり、くどくど議論したり、その疑問のために皆さんが現れたりしたのかどうか討論することで、心底楽しんだ。」という感じになるんだろうか？ やはり「the ladies and gentlemen appeared as they did for the question」の部分が意味不明だなぁ。
