They could of course include dressmakers, and shoe makers and so on, but they don't - which perhaps is rather unfair, and it definitely seems unfair not to include the rest of mankind, for we owe a debt of gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever it was that put the idea of fig leaves and so on into the heads of simple, unadorned, Adam and Eve.

前回の続きから。一つの文にどんだけ時間をかけてるんだという気がしないでもない。

とりあえず訂正から。前々回、「debt of gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever」を「(gratitude to the apple) or (the snake), or (whatever)」だと思い込んで、「リンゴへの感謝や蛇などといった負債」と訳してみたけど、冷静に考えると「gratitude to (the apple or the snake, or whatever)」と解釈するのが正解だと気づいた。だから訳は「リングや蛇などへの感謝という負債」とすべきだった。

で、今回は関係代名詞「which」以降、「perhaps is rather unfair, and it definitely seems unfair not to include the rest of mankind」に注目してみる。

「rather」は「相当」とか「思ったより」とかの意味、「perhaps is rather unfair」は「たぶん、思ったより不公平」とかそんな感じで良いだろう。

続く「and it definitely seems unfair not to include the rest of mankind」、「the rest of mankind」は「the rest of 〜」で「〜以外の部分」というイディオムなので「人類以外のもの」、それが「not to include」ということなので「人類以外のものを含まない」ということになる。「definitely」は「明確」という意味なので「it definitely seems unfair」は「それは明らかに不公平に見える」、つなげると「それは明らかに人類以外を含んでおらず不公平」という感じかな。なんか同じような意味の文章を「and」でつなぐのにはなんか意味があるんだろうか？

とりあえず、これで各部分については何となく意味が掴めたような気がするので、全文を読んでみると「彼らは婦人服の仕立屋や靴職人も含むことができただろうが、しかしそうはしなかった。アダムとイブの単純で飾らない頭にイチジクの葉などの知恵を授けたリンゴや蛇などへの感謝という負債を持つ私達にとって、それはたぶん、思ったより不公平な、明らかに人間以外のものを含まない不公平にみえるからだ。」

んー、意味が判るような判らないないような、正しいような正しくないような… 例によって成否の判断が付かないので何ともいえないが、今の時点の英語力ではこれが精一杯といったところ。

とりあえず、激しい敗北感に囚われつつも、次回は次の文に進むことにする。
