They could of course include dressmakers, and shoe makers and so on, but they don't - which perhaps is rather unfair, and it definitely seems unfair not to include the rest of mankind, for we owe a debt of gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever it was that put the idea of fig leaves and so on into the heads of simple, unadorned, Adam and Eve.

四番目の文章、急に長く複雑な文章に。ダッシュやらカンマやら and や or でやたらと文章が接続されていて混乱する。ダッシュの後にある「which」は関係代名詞ということで良いのかな? だとすればこの場合の先行詞は何になるんだ?

とりあえず、文頭の「They could of course include dressmakers, and shoe makers and so on, but they don't」の部分に注目してみる。

「dressmakers」は婦人服の仕立屋、英語では紳士服と婦人服の仕立屋では異なる単語になる。ここらへんの文化的な背景が気になるところだけど、とりあえず放置。文脈上、主語の「They」は紳士服の仕立屋を指している。「and so on」は「など」という意味。

これらを踏まえてざっくり読んでみると「彼らは婦人服の仕立屋や靴職人も含むことができただろうが、しかしそうはしなかった。」という感じだろうか?「course」や「include」の訳が全然適切で無い気がする。「含む」って何だ? 最初に出てきた「small club」のメンバーに入れるということなのか、それとも仕立屋という職業の内訳として婦人服や靴の製造を取り入れるという話なのか?
