They could of course include dressmakers, and shoe makers and so on, but they don't - which perhaps is rather unfair, and it definitely seems unfair not to include the rest of mankind, for we owe a debt of gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever it was that put the idea of fig leaves and so on into the heads of simple, unadorned, Adam and Eve.

前回から引き続き、4番目の文。

「which」は関係代名詞で、続く「perhaps」から文末までが「but they don't」にかかるという解釈で問題ないのかな。

とりあえず、文末の「for we」から始まる部分に注目してみる。

「for we owe a debt of gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever it was that put the idea of fig leaves and so on into the heads of simple, unadorned, Adam and Eve.」

「owe」以降の部分は「for we」の「we」に対する説明と考えて良いだろう。「owe」は「（金などを）借りる」という意味、「debt」は「借金」、「it was that」は強調を意味するイディオム。

とりあえずややこしい修飾を除去して文章を単純化すると「we owe a debt it was that put the idea into the heads」となり、直訳すると「私達はアイデアを頭に入れた負債を抱えている」とでもなるんだろか？

あとはこの文に個々の修飾を加えていけば良い筈。

「gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever」が「debt」の修飾で、「gratitude」は「感謝」の意味、「whatever」はこの場合「その他なんでも」という意味だから「debt of gratitude to the apple or the snake, or whatever」で「リンゴへの感謝や蛇などといった負債」とでも解釈すれば良いのかな？
